The Ambassador of Georgia to the Hellenic Republic H.E. Levan Beridze welcomed at the Embassy premisses the prominent Georgian sculptor Mr. Giorgi Shkhvatsabaia and the Georgian National Olympic Committee delegation, led by the President of the Olympic Committee, Mr. Leri Khabelovi.
Significantly, upon the nomination of the Georgian Olympic Committee and with the support of the Embassy of Georgia, the famous Georgian sculptor was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Ancient Olympia, Greece. The award ceremony was held after the Olympic flame lighting ceremony. The Georgian sculptor was granted the certificate of honor by the Mayor of Olympia, Mr. Aristides Panagiotopoulos.
The Georgian Ambassador warmly congratulated Giorgi Shkhvatsabaia on his well-deserved award and highlighted his contribution in the development of Georgian fine arts as well as the popularization of Georgia abroad.
Giorgi Shkhvatsabaia's famous statue "The Torch of Peace" was constracted in 1992 in Ancient Olympia as a symbol of friendship between the Georgian and Greek nations. Shkhvatsabaia is the author of numerous famous sculptures and has received the Order of Honor in Georgia.
